The Department of Botany was established in 1929 as an intermediate course under the University of Calcutta. Prof. Nagendra Nath Sarkar was the only lecturer at that time. Botany could then be studied with subjects of Arts combination. In the year 1961 Botany became a subject of B.Sc. under the University of Burdwan.
This department maintained a Medicinal Garden within the college campus. Several research projects under UGC were carried out by this department. It also conducted classes for pre-medical course and Rural technology. Two UGC sponsored Minor Research Projects have been completed by Dr. Arijit Sinhababu & Dr. Arpita Banerjee (Optimization of seed germination and selection of suitable tree legumes for agroforestry. Memo No.F.PSW-002/10-11 (ERO) date 20.10.2010) and another by Dr. Manoranjan Chakraborty (Diversity & Distribution of Vesicular – Arbuscular Mycorrhizae of some medicinal plants in an around Bankura District Town and its adjoining areas. Memo no. F. PSW-003/ERO dated 20/10/10).
Now the Botany department consists of three laboratories, one lecture-hall, a staff-room, a mode well-equipped research apparatus, one reading room with library facilities.
Quite a number of our alumni have distinguished themselves in academic and administrative areas in India and abroad are in charge of responsible positions. Many of our students get admitted in M.Sc., MTech. and Ph.D. programmes throughout India.
Department of Botany, Bankura Christian College is the first department in our college where UGC Sponsored (Vide Memo No. F. No. 4-30/2010 (COC) dated 22 March, 2010 by UGC) Career-Oriented Course entitled- “Mushroom Cultivation and Production” has been introduced under the affiliation of The University of Burdwan (The University of Burdwan vide memo no. IC/Misc/577/A Dated 4th October, 2010 & IC/COP/562 Dated 17th September, 2010).
One UGC sponsored National Seminar entitled “Exploitation of Biofertilizer and Biopesticides of Sustainable Development of Mode Agriculture” on 18th -19thFeburary, 2011 in collaboration with Diocesan Board of Social Service; Diocese Durgapur was organized by this department. One West Bengal State Council of Science and Technology sponsored State level seminar entitled “Mode Trend of Research in Micropropagation for Socio-Economic Development in Human Welfare” was organized by this department on 14 th October, 2015. Department has been conducting M. Sc Course under Vidyasagar University distance Education since 2016. Faculty members of Botany Department are involved in conducting B. Sc (Hons), EBT under Netaji Subhas Open University. This department is now affiliated under Bankura University from 2017.
