The Department of English started its jouey in 1911. Since then the department has always been a centre of excellence. In 2001 post graduation was introduced in English and that marked the beginning of another phase of its academic pursuit. The students of the department were privileged to receive the services of the eminent Tagore scholar, Edward Thompson in the 1920’s as well as some other nationally and inteationally acclaimed scholars.

The department has an adequate number of efficient and competent faculties who cater to the academic need of the students. The teachers are well published and have academic mobility which results in the phenomenal success of the students. The competence of the faculties is reflected in the uniform brilliant results of the students over the last few years in the university examinations and the distinguished record of research activities and publications as well.

The department of English has always been the leading department in the college not only for its academic enterprises but also for inculcating values, finer sensibilities of life, and generating in students a keen interest to cater to the demands of the community. One after another feathers were added to the cap of the department and the college as a whole because of the committed service of the eminent, erudite scholars on the faculty and some dedicated students who, in spite of the toughness of the topography and the economic backwardness of this region, create wonders.

The department has been publishing a refereed research joual, Appropriations since 2005. Its eleventh volume has come out. This research joual has eaed a nationwide popularity now and the contributors are mostly from different universities across the nation. It has an inteational serial number and has been receiving contributions from abroad as well.

The department has started a research centre for American Studies, Australian Studies, and Canadian Studies which will definitely help the students in their academic enterprises.
